Highway Pursuit Frequently Asked Questions
The following answers are for questions I commonly get asked about Highway Pursuit.
When I start the game, I get an error message saying that "D3D8.DLL cannot be found." Where can I get this DLL from?This error appears because your installation of DirectX is either missing or out of date. You need to have DirectX 8.1 or later installed in order to play the game.
To get the latest version of DirectX, visit Microsoft's DirectX site. Make sure you download the correct DirectX installer for whichever version of Windows you are using
Once you've installed that, reboot and try Highway Pursuit again. It should work fine now.
When I start the game, the logo screens display properly but the rest of the game is entirely black and white and it's impossible to see what's happening. What's wrong?
I've had several reports of this problem in the past with Intel graphics chipsets. Some of the people in the past reported that they fixed the problem by updating their graphics drivers. You should be able to download them from the Drivers section on Intel's web site.
Make sure you download the correct drivers for your graphics controller and read any installation instructions before you install them to avoid messing up your Windows installation. I've not used any of these myself so I can't make any claims as to how good they are.
If you're not using an Intel graphics chipset, then please ensure that the chipset you are using is DirectX 8 compatible, and that it has the latest drivers installed. This will cure most graphical problems.
Are there any cheats for Highway Pursuit?
The original version of the game had no cheats built in. Strangely, some cheats were distributed on the internet (despite not actually working at all). For v1.1 I thought it would be fun to actually implement the fake cheats and make them work, so I did. But if you want to know what they are, you'll have to search for them yourself. :-) When any of the cheats are active, your score will be disabled so you won't be able to use them to get extra high scores.
Where can I find the online high score table?
The Retrospec web site holds the Highway Pursuit high-score table. You can upload your scores from within the game (by selecting "Upload after every game" from the Highscores Options page, or by selecting "Upload high scores" from the main menu). Be warned that the high score table is very large and getting anywhere near the top can be very difficult.
To view the highscore table, visit the Retrospec site. Click the "View High Scores" button at the right side of the page, and then select Highway Pursuit from the list of games.
After I Alt-Tab away from the game (or another application pops up and steals the focus away), the game goes into pause mode, but I can't find a way to get the game started again. What do I need to do?
To unpause the game, press thePause/Breakkey -- just above thePage Upkey. This will restart the game. The same key can also be used to pause the game while it's playing.
